How to use a mailing list
Here we describe the basics of using the list software Mailman and give an overview of the most important functions, such as changing passwords, subscribing or unsubscribing from mailing lists.

Subscribe to a mailing list
This section explains how to subscribe to an existing mailing list that you would like to join. If you want to subscribe to your own mailing list, please go to our order form.
- Go to lists.servus.at and choose the list you want to subscribe to.
- Enter your e-mail address.
- Enter your full name in the name field (optional).
- Choose a password. (How to create a secure password you can read here.)
- Re-confirm your password.
- For the Digest option, choose “Yes” if you want to receive list mail in a digest that is distributed once per day. If you prefer to receive messages as they are posted, click “No”.
After that you will receive a confirmation e-mail. Follow the instructions in the message to confirm your subscription. Once your subscription is confirmed, you will receive a welcome message to the mailing list.
Post a message to a mailing list
You can post a message to a subscribed mailing list by sending an e-mail to listname@list.servus.at
, where “listname
” is the name of the list you subscribed to.
Unsubscribe from a mailing list
From now on there are always two ways, how you can interact with the mailing list settings:
- the web interface: To use it you need to open your browser and navigate to the mailing list options page.
- the e-mail interface: You can send commands to the mailinglist by e-mail and the mailinglist will reply to your requests.

From the web interface:
- Look for the section marked “Austragen / Ändern einer Mailadresse” (usually found near the bottom of the page).
- There should be a button marked “Abonnement abbestellen oder Einstellungen bearbeiten”. Enter your e-mail address in the box beside this button and press the button.
- You should be brought to a new page which has an “Kündigung des Abos” button. Press it to unsubscribe and follow the instructions given.
Using the e-mail interface:
- Open a mail program and use the mail account which receives mail from the list you want to unsubscribe.
- Send a mail to the list unsubscribe address, which will be of the form
LISTNAME-leave@DOMAIN
. The subject and body of this message will be ignored, so it doesn’t matter what you put there.
Change your password
From the web interface:
- Log in to your member options page (usually found at http://lists.servus.at/mailman/options/LISTNAME/EMAIL where
LISTNAME
ist the name of the list andEMAIL
is the e-mail address you registered with). - Look for the password changing boxes on the right-hand side of the page and enter your new password in the appropriate boxes, then press the button marked “Change My Password”.
From the e-mail interface:
- Send a mail to
LISTNAME-request@DOMAIN
with the command:password $<$OLDPASSWORD$>$ $<$NEWPASSWORD$>$
. - Commands can appear in either the body or the subject of the message.
- If you are not sending mail from your membership address, you can also specify this address with
address=$<$ADDRESS$>$
after$<$NEWPASSWORD$>$
. - For example, if sabina@servus.at wanted to change her “mylist” password from “foo” to “bar”, but she was sending mail from her work address sabina@work.com, she could send a message to
mylist-request@lists.servus.at
with the subject set topassword foo bar address=sabina@servus.at
.
Request your password
From the web interface:
- Log in to your member options page (usually found at http://lists.servus.at/mailman/options/LISTNAME/EMAIL where
LISTNAME
ist the name of the list andEMAIL
is the e-mail address you registered with). - Look for the “Passwort-Erinnerung” section and press the button marked “Passwort zumailen”.
From the e-mail interface:
- Send a mail to
LISTNAME-request@DOMAIN
with the command:password
. - Commands can appear in either the body or the subject of the message.
- You will get a reply e-mail with your current password.
